Deep Central Nebraska Roots

Matt Williams is a 4th generation Nebraskan, who was born and raised in Gothenburg. His great-great-grandfather, H.L. Williams settled in Gothenburg in the 1890s, where he farmed and ranched before starting a local bank to help families in the area have a shot at success. Growing up Matt worked on his family farm, where he learned Nebraska values of hard work and responsibility. These values helped him earn a scholarship to attend the University of Nebraska–Lincoln and receive a degree in business administration.

Matt then attended the University of Nebraska College of Law. Following graduation in 1974, Matt and his wife Susan moved to Gothenburg to take over management of the family-owned bank.

Since 1974, Matt has worked with thousands of families, farmers, ranchers, and small businesses to help them thrive in central Nebraska. Following in his father’s and grandfathers’ footsteps, he’s worked to make sure future generations have the opportunity to succeed.

Our Conservative State Senator

In 2015, Matt became a State Senator representing District 36 in Central Nebraska and was re-elected in 2018. Over the last seven years, he has worked hard to create tax relief, grow businesses and jobs, and protect our rural Nebraska values for future generations.

Matt currently serves as Chairman of the Banking, Commerce, and Insurance Committee, Vice-Chairman of the Health and Human Services Committee, and on the Legislature’s Planning Committee and Economic Development Task Force.

A Stronger University for a Stronger Nebraska

As a proud father of two and grandfather of six, Matt is running for the Nebraska Board of Regents to build a stronger Nebraska by retaining our best and brightest students, strengthening our workforce, and keeping the University transparent and affordable.
